Prior to 2025, parts of the map collection were unlabeled and not listed individually in the library’s catalog. In early 2025, a project was undertaken to inventory the collection, determine an appropriate scope for the research needs of Michigan Tech researchers, and ensure that the collection would be easily accessible.

After an initial assessment and conversations with researchers, the revised collection will focus on the Great Lakes region. Maps outside of this scope will be offered to campus partners, our regional Federal Depository (University of Minnesota), and patrons.\

Longer term, we plan to scan rare maps (facilitating GIS projects!), create finding aids, and ensure all maps are accessible via the library’s catalog. For questions about this project, please contact library@mtu.edu
